Policy 3421 : Physical Wellness, Nutrition and Activity

Status : ADOPTED
Original Adopted Date: 08/08/2011 | Last Revised Date: 07/01/2020 | Last Reviewed Date : 07/01/2020
To ensure the health and well-being of all students, it is the policy of the Boise School District to maintain a District wellness committee, support nutrition standards and promote physical activity.
District Wellness Committee:
  • With the purposes of monitoring the implementation of the District’s wellness policies, evaluating policy progress, serving as a resource to school sites, and recommending changes to the policy as necessary, a District-wide wellness committee will develop, implement, monitor, and review District-wide nutrition and physical activity practices.
  • Committee membership will consist of: a Board member; the District Food & Nutrition Service Supervisor; a school health professional; a parent representative; a student representative from each school level, a member of the general public; a staff member representative from each school level; an administrative representative; and the physical education and health program leader.  The committee will appoint a designated Wellness Committee chair.
  • The committee will meet a minimum of three times annually.
  • In each school, the principal or designee with authority will ensure compliance with wellness practices in their school and will complete the District’s School Wellness Assessment Checklist to determine school compliance annually.  The assessment will be reported to the Wellness Committee annually.
  • The Wellness Committee will develop a summary report every three years on District-wide compliance with the District’s established student nutrition and physical activity, and wellness policies based on input from schools within the District. That report will be provided to the School Board.
  • The Food & Nutrition Services Supervisor will ensure compliance with all United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) nutrition regulations within school food service areas and report on this matter to the Superintendent or designee annually.
  • The Committee will communicate with the public, including parents, students, and others in the community about the content, implementation, and compliance of the wellness policy through the District website. Principals shall share the District Wellness Policy at staff meetings and in parent and student newsletters.

Each building principal will designate one or more persons at each school as the individual charged with the operational responsibility for ensuring the school meets the adopted wellness policy. This responsibility includes completing the District’s School Wellness Assessment Checklist and submitting it to the District Wellness Coordinator annually.
