Welcome to Members, Staff and Guests - Dr. April Moore, Superintendent
President Eric Yeager called the meeting to order at 9:05 am. Dr. Moore expressed appreciation to Inyokern Elementary School for hosting the meeting. following the model of "Capturing Kids' Hearts, she encouraged attendees to share "Good Things" with one another.
Approval of Minutes of the March 12, 2026 Meeting
The minutes were approved as written.
Communicate and Empower

Attendance Focus Results

Dr. Moore provided an overview of the district’s ongoing attendance challenges. She reported that the district’s attendance percentage has improved compared to the same time last year, though it remains below the target of 94%, currently at 92%. Dr. Moore expressed appreciation to all partners for their continued support.
Before and After School Programming

Sarah Dastrup, Coordinator of Community Schools and Expanded Learning Opportunities, gave a presentation on the Before and After School Programs. The presentation highlighted key program components, including nutritious snacks, homework support, educational enrichment activities, and opportunities for physical activity. She stated that the program is available to all students at elementary school sites.
Community Schools Program

Sarah Dastrup, Coordinator of Community Schools and Expanded Learning Opportunities, explained that a Community School is both a physical site and a network of partnerships between the education system and local government agencies, functioning as a “whole-child” school improvement strategy. Ms. Dastrup also provided examples of services and resources offered, including dental and vision care programs and Snacks & Packs, providing food during times when school is on break, and participation in community events.
Listening Sessions

Dr. April Moore reported that she will host a “Coffee with the Superintendent” on May 21, providing an informal opportunity for community members to meet with her and engage in conversation. She also shared that she is conducting “Listening Sessions” at each school site to gather input from staff, including suggestions and concerns.

School Awards & Recognitions

China Lake Junior High School has been awarded the Purple Star designation, which recognizes schools that demonstrate a strong commitment to supporting military-connected students and their families. China Lake Junior High joins Las Flores and Richmond Elementary in earning this recognition.
Employee of the Year

Dr. Moore congratulated Bryan Auld on being selected as Administrator of the Year by his peers and remarked on the success of the event. She also noted that next year’s event may be live-streamed.
Graduations & Promotions

Dr. Moore reported on upcoming graduation and promotion ceremonies, noting that China Lake Junior High, Las Flores, Faller, Mesquite, and High Desert Schools will host their events at the Desert Empire Fairgrounds. She also highlighted the efforts of the Safe Graduation Committee, which is organizing an all-night event to provide a safe celebration for graduating students.
