Max Lopez, Del Mar HS Student Board Member, presented the following report:

Things happening at Coolidge Elementary School:
- Coolidge students are demonstrating the SGUSD Portrait of a Graduate competencies through their recent activities and daily efforts.
- The Global Citizen competency remains our focus through the end of 2025 at Coolidge.
- Global citizenship for kids means understanding we're all part of one world, sharing humanity, and working for a fairer, kinder planet by respecting differences, learning about other cultures, and taking action on issues like climate change, fostering empathy, critical thinking, and community involvement. It's about connecting local actions to global impact, developing skills to thrive in diverse spaces, and seeing themselves as agents for positive change, not just members of their town.
- There are many examples of how Coolidge Cougars have been exploring what global citizenry means, during the month of December.
- First Grade students are on a whirlwind, literature-based tour of winter celebrations and traditions across 17 countries. Listening to stories, illustrating writing, and singing helps first graders consider the world beyond their own family and school community.
- Fourth and Fifth Grade students are participating in theater projects linked to History-Social Science content standards that interpret historical events, California through stories, costumes, and interactive learning. Simple costumes and props along with an introduction to acting have helped students connect to the past with emotion, creativity and imagination.
- Coolidge Elementary School wishes everyone a connected and joyful Winter Break!
Things happening at Washington Elementary School:
- As we step into the joyful month of December, Washington Elementary is glowing with warmth, gratitude, and celebration! We extend our heartfelt holiday wishes to our Board Members, Cabinet, and entire Washington community. This season is a beautiful time to reflect, connect, and celebrate the many traditions, cultures, and moments of joy that make our school so special.
- Our WRISE Warriors are partnering with the San Gabriel Fire Department for our Spark of Love Toy Drive. This meaningful initiative invites our community to donate new, unwrapped toys to support children in need during the holiday season. It is a powerful way for our students to practice generosity, empathy, and service to others. True Warrior values in action!
- Community spirit continues to shine with our Walking School Bus happening this Friday! Our Warriors, families, and staff will come together to promote safety, wellness, and togetherness as we walk to school side by side. It’s always inspiring to see our community in motion—united and energized for the day! Join us at Fire Station 52 on Friday at 7:30 AM in your green and gold!
- Also on Friday, we will proudly host our Trimester 1 Awards Assembly for students in grades 1st through 5th. This special celebration will recognize our students for their academic achievements, leadership, growth, and for living the Washington Way—being kind, safe, and responsible! We are so excited to honor the hard work and dedication of our Warriors.
- On December 18th, our youngest learners will take the stage for the TK and Kindergarten Holiday Performances. Families can look forward to heartwarming songs, joyful performances, and lots of smiles as our students share seasonal traditions through music and movement in a way that reflects the rich diversity of our community. Join us for their performances at 8:15 AM.
- December at Washington is filled with celebration, service, and togetherness. We are grateful for the continued support of our Board, Cabinet, families, and community partners. From all of us at Washington Elementary, we wish you a season filled with peace, joy, connection, and light!
Things happening at Jefferson Middle School:
- JMS hosted over 260 middle school students in Los Angeles County for a Speech and Debate Tournament last Friday evening. Bulldogs did an outstanding job by bringing home several trophies in different categories. Thank you Mrs. Hussar for your work with our students. Our Mock Trial Team had a successful year. Students competed, and several awards were given. Our very own Sophia Le swept the Mock Trial category as Journalist! She also received this honor last year! What a talent.
- This week, our spectacular Music Department will host a Holiday concert tomorrow, Thursday and Friday nights starting at 6:00 pm in the gym. If you want to get into the holiday spirit, join our choir, band, and orchestra students!
- As we get closer to Winter break, we thank JMS PTA who will provide lunch for our teachers and a Winter Extravaganza, that includes snow, for our students and staff.
- Principal and AP Ingram wish our JMS Team and you all a joyous holiday season.
Things happening at Del Mar HS:
- We’ve had a busy and exciting few weeks at Del Mar. The Friday before break, our students visited Glendale Community College for a campus tour and a presentation in the planetarium. For many of us, it was the first time seeing a college campus up close, and it helped us better understand our college and career options after graduation.
- We also wrapped up Trimester 1 and celebrated with a school-wide BBQ. Our Adult Transition Program students cooked and served burgers and fries for the whole school, and it was a great way to end the trimester together. Before break, we also held a food drive to stock the pantry, volunteered at the Washington Elementary carnival, and celebrated with pie.
- We are very proud to share that Del Mar student Nathan Zamora is this year’s recipient of the Every Student Succeeding Award. He was celebrated at the ACSA ceremony last month and he received a $400 check.
- Today, we received an incredible donation—a beautiful baby grand piano—which will support our music class and bring more opportunities for creativity on our campus. Big thank you to the Kwok family from Alhambra.
- Tomorrow evening, from 5–7pm, Del Mar will participate in our district's Community Schools Advisory Committee meeting, where families, students, and partners help shape the support and programs we offer.
- We are also excited to announce that our seniors have started Life Skills Training classes provided by our partner, Day One, and all students will soon begin a new Personal Finance curriculum. This will prepare us for our upcoming field trip to Finance Park in March, where we’ll learn real-world budgeting and financial decision-making.
- On behalf of all Del Mar students, thank you for continuing to support our school, our wellness programs, and our pathways for success.
Keilani Lee, Gabrielino HS Student Board Member, presented the following report:

Things happening at Roosevelt Elementary School:
- 1st Trimester Academic Awards will be held on Wednesday, December 10.
- Books and Bears is on Thursday, December 11 from 4-6 PM. This is a time when students can come have books read to them, get a special snack and hot chocolate, and just enjoy some holiday and reading fun.
- The Book Fair is running next week, Monday through Thursday. It will be open at different times throughout the week for students to shop, and it will be open from 3:00-4:00 PM on Thursday for family shopping before our Books and Bears event.
- Bend the Rules: students that have been following the 3 R's(Ready, Responsible, Respectful) get a special 30-minute recess on December 12, where they can bring items to play that are typically not allowed.
- The Speech and Debate Tournament and Student of the Month Assembly will be hosted on December 13 and 15, respectively.
- The Music Immersion Experience Program at Roosevelt Elementary School will be hosting various holiday concerts on December 15, 16 and 18.
Things happening at Wilson Elementary School:
- Wilson Elementary is excited to share several festive events happening over the next two weeks as we celebrate the holiday season together as a community:
- The Wilson Spark of Love Toy Drive will run from Monday, December 8th through Friday, December 19th. Students and families are encouraged to show empathy this holiday season by donating a new, unused toy to support those in need. The San Gabriel Fire Department will be stopping by campus and picking up the toys in their fire trucks.
- Our annual PTA Holiday Dinner will be held at Clearman’s Galley from 6:00pm–8:00pm on December 10. Families and staff are warmly invited to attend and enjoy this special evening together.
- Our TK–2nd grade students will be performing holiday songs in the Spirit Circle on December 12th. This promises to be a fun and joyous event for our entire community. Members of the Board and Cabinet are also welcome to attend.
- Santa Claus will be on campus next Wednesday, December 17, taking pictures with students and staff for a magical holiday experience!
- Wishing everyone a wonderful holiday season and looking forward to celebrating with you!
Things happening at Gabrielino High School:
- Fall Play, a witty take on Greek Mythology, was performed from November 14–16. It was amazing to see another wonderful production from our drama team. We are excited to see their spring play later next semester.
- The Boys basketball team just started with a new coach, only the third ever coach at Gab.
- Girls Basketball is starting and trying to defend their CIF title.
- Lots of Fall sports are having recognition banquets, including flag football, girls golf & volleyball, football, cross-country teams. Attendance has been amazing, with lots of parents supporting. It’s great to recognize our athletes' accomplishments.
- We have hired two new swim coaches from ELAC and are very optimistic about the team.
- GAB is hosting ten different schools for the Wrestling Ten Team Duel event.
- The competition cheer team has a holiday spirit challenge with more routines that are different from the usual sideline cheer performances.
- Planning a new ebike policy with a soft roll-out of registration processes next semester. A hard roll-out will begin next school year.
- New cell phone policy will be in place for January, currently getting stakeholder feedback from students and families.
- FBLA is holding a member recognition ceremony today.
- PTSA luncheon for teacher appreciation is scheduled for tomorrow.
- ASB BBQ is this Friday and there will be photo opportunities with Santa/the Grinch.
- Next week is finals: Wednesday through Friday.

- Thank you to outgoing Governing Board President Haas for her dedication and her thoughtful, eloquent feedback throughout the year.
- Enjoyed the CSBA Annual Education Conference last week. Artificial intelligence was a very prevalent theme, and our district is definitely ahead of the curve.
- Attended Washington’s Winterfest and had a fantastic time.
- Looking forward to all the winter events and holiday cheer.
- Warmest birthday wishes to Dr. Scott.
- Happy holidays to everyone, and enjoy precious family time.
REPORT - Superintendent
Superintendent, James Symonds, reported on the following topics:

Welcome, everyone, and happy holidays to our San Gabriel Unified community. I want to begin by congratulating our new Board President, Cheryl Shellhart, Vice President Gina Chi, and Clerk, Dr. Gary Scott. Thank you, as always, for your dedication and willingness to serve.

I also want to extend a big thank-you to our outgoing President, Rochelle Haas. It has truly been an honor to work with you this past year. We faced our share of challenges, and I am grateful for your leadership, steady guidance, and unwavering support through each one. Your commitment to our students and families has been clear in everything you do. You have modeled the very qualities we value in SGUSD, creative thinking, collaboration, global citizenship, empathy, strong communication, and resilience. You demonstrated the competencies of the Portrait of a Governing Board Member. Thank you, Rochelle, and congratulations on completing a successful 2024–2025 term.

Last week, I enjoyed attending the CSBA Annual Education Conference with our Board Members. I appreciated the learning, but even more, I valued the time together as a Governance Team. A huge thank-you to my Executive Assistant, Rosalie Cho, for handling all of the logistics. It’s a lot of work, and you made everything smooth from start to finish. We all felt well taken care of, thank you.

On November 20, I had the pleasure of attending the ACSA Region 15 Every Student Succeeds Awards Ceremony at the NOOR Event Center in Pasadena. This event honors students who have overcome significant challenges and demonstrated resilience, growth, and determination with the support of their schools and families. Each district in Region 15 selects one student whose story reflects perseverance and the ability to thrive despite adversity. This year, SGUSD proudly recognized Del Mar High School senior Nathan Zamora as our recipient. Nathan truly embodies the Portrait of a Graduate competency of resilience. He has been an outstanding student leader during his time in SGUSD, serving as a Student Governing Board Member, contributing his voice on the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council, and offering meaningful input on the Educational Advisory Council. Nathan has consistently used his platform to advocate for positive change and elevate student voice across the district. He will be graduating early in March and plans to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps. We are incredibly proud of him. Congratulations to Nathan on being selected as SGUSD’s Region 15 ACSA Every Student Succeeds Award recipient!

I am looking forward to all the holiday performances in the coming weeks and I want to wish everyone in SGUSD a joyful and restful holiday season.

Rochell Haas
- Thank you Ms. Shellhart for your willingness to serve as the 2026 Board President.
- Thank you for all the kind words from the Board members. It was a pleasure to serve.
- Artifical intelligence was a prominent theme at the CSBA conference. Reviewed many legal issues and cases with potential impacts on education.
- Enjoyed a wonderful time at the Washington Winterfest.
Dr. Gary Scott
- The presentation earlier on California School Dashboard Update indicated that we are closing the achievement gaps. At the same time, the report also highlighted opportunities for improvement. There are some subgroups we should be mindful and focus on.
- CSBA Conference was a perfect opportunity to discuss pertinent topics for our district as well as build teamwork and understanding with other board members. Learned how CTE Pathway is important to student success. The Board is here to serve students with different needs.
Gina Chi
- Visited Wilson and noted the slide in the playground was repaired.
- Happy to hear that GAB swim team has recruited new coaches. This is a wonderful outcome. I want to encourage students to share their thoughts and feedback.
- Safety of our students is of the utmost importance. Families need to be careful with pick-up and drop-off. Glad that we are focusing on e-bike safety and that Wilson and JMS sidewalks are re-painted.
- Happy holidays and looking forward to attending all the winter concerts.
Robert Mercado
- CSBA conference last week was very informational. It was very inspiring to see all the great work done by other districts. Learned about the important visions out there related to AI and CTE.
- Looking forward to my second year as Board member.

Administration recommends that the Governing Board authorize the following District employees to attend the conference events listed. The representative of the District indicated will attend with no loss of salaries for District personnel, and with actual and necessary expenses paid for all attending as authorized by Education Code Sections 35172, 35173 and 44032, and the District's Board policies. Authorization for an advance of funds to cover actual and necessary expenses is hereby granted. Such Advances shall be repaid or adjusted upon filing of a regular claim for the actual and necessary expenses incurred.
