In recent months, the Ben Hill County Board of Education has asked Finance Director Thomas Rachels to examine the system's policies on sick leave for employees. At last Tuesday's meeting, Rachels gave his recommendations. "There is no mechanism for sharing sick days except by establishing a "bank"‚? Rachels advised. "We need to examine the best way to do that (establish a bank), if that's what you want to do." The board approved a request to abolish a practice of continuing to pay teachers for a 10-day period after personal sick leave is exhausted. The board also eliminated the practice of granting sick leave "up front," before it's earned, rather than "as earned" effective July 1, 2008.
