Q. If a person has a teaching certificate but was not in the classroom long enough to earn tenure, and then was promoted to Central Office to a position that doesn't require a certificate, after 3 years in the system, are they tenured or not? As a teacher or classified?
A. As long as there’s no loss of pay, this is a considered a reassignment, as opposed to a transfer. Therefore, the procedure requires the superintendent to give the teacher notice of his decision to transfer. The board does not have to approve the action and the teacher has no right to contest or appeal. However, this must be done before the 20th day of classes.
